The Take Back Initiative addressesa vital public safety and public health issue. Many Americans are not awarethat medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible todiversion, misuse, abuse and theft. Rates of prescription drug abuse in theU.S. are at alarming rates, as are the number of accidental poisonings andoverdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that many abused prescription drugsare obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unusedmedicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away - bothpotential safety and health hazards.
As well as participating in theannual Take-Back event, the Orinda Police Department/City Offices maintain aprescription drug collection bin at City Hall, located at 22 Orinda Way,Orinda, CA that can be used all year around. The collection bin is accessibleMonday through Friday from 8:00am to 12:00noon and 1:00pm to 5:00pm.
