On the heels of a sold-out season opener featuring the passion of the gypsy spirit, the Gold Coast Chamber Players switch gears and perform the music of Mozart and Mendelssohn in Prodigies. The all-star group features Gil Sharon and Rebecca Jackson, violins, Ron Ephrat and Pamela Freund, violas, and Jennifer Culp (formerly of the Kronos Quartet), cello. This will be the third Gold Coast appearance of Gil Sharon and Ron Ephrat, members of the Netherlands-based Amati Ensemble. The concert will be held on Friday, October 30, 2015 at 7:30 PM at the Lafayette Library Community Hall, 3491 Mt. Diablo Blvd. in Lafayette.A pre-concert talk will start the evening at 7:00 PM.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Felix Mendelssohn are among the greatest child prodigies of all time. The later works of Mozart and Mendelssohn reveal that they developed their talents and achieved artistic maturity.
Gil Sharon, acclaimed violin soloist, concertmaster, and chamber musician, founded the Amati Ensemble in 1992. The ensemble, named for the famous family of Italian violinmakers, has performed its own concert series in the city of Maastricht since 1995. Ron Ephrat, viola, also performs with the Amati Ensemble and is the Principal Viola of the Rotterdam Philharmonic.
Mendelssohn’s Second String Quintet is similar to Mozart’s String Quintet K. 515 in that they are “viola quintets” – string quartet plus an extra viola. Mozart’s quintet is conversational in nature and considered a masterpiece among his chamber works. It inspired Franz Schubert to write his own quintet in the same key of C Major. Mozart’s Duo for violin and viola features a sparkling exchange between the two instruments. Viola was one of Mozart’s favorite instruments. In the duo, it is an equal partner with the violin, rather than its familiar role as an accompanying voice.
The Gold Coast Chamber Players are known for their engaging and vibrant performances. Audiences have been responding with such enthusiasm that tickets are in great demand.
Ticket price includes complimentary champagne, a pre-concert talk at 7:00 PM, and a reception with the musicians following the performance. Tickets are available at www.gcplayers.org and by phone at (925) 283-3728. Limited seating, please reserve early.
