Beginning in May in Lamorinda, Republic Services (formerly Allied Waste) and RecycleSmart (formerly Central Contra Costa Solid Waste Authority) will be enhancing your recycling, organics and solid waste services through a new contract. This will include new carts with a new color scheme and clearer signage to help you increase diversion and help California reach its goal of diverting 75% of solid waste from the landfill by 2020!
For most residents, your new Recycle, Organics and Landfill carts will be delivered the day before your regular collection day (if your regular collection day is Monday, the carts will be delivered on the previous Friday). Following delivery of your new carts, your old carts will be removed on your next collection day. You will be provided the same cart sizes you have now.
Your recycling cart will be blue and will accept recyclable items such as cardboard, paper, glass, metal (aluminum cans, etc.) and plastic containers and plastic bags (bagged together in one bag). Your organics cart will remain green and will accept food waste items such as food scraps, paper napkins/plates/cups, and yard waste. Your landfill cart will be black and will take items that do not belong in the either of the other two carts.
“By implementing these changes, we hope to facilitate and clarify the process of recycling for residents so that we may reduce the amount of trash sent to the landfill and all do our part to sustain a healthy planet,” Tim Argenti, General Manager, Republic Services said.
“Given the new mandated recycling and trash diversion laws, recycling in multifamily complexes is a significant opportunity for growth,” Ken Etherington, Executive Director, RecycleSmart said. “These complexes can educate tenants on recycling methods, improve their recycling rates, and even adopt food scrap composting programs. Additionally, more educational materials will be offered at multifamily properties as we work toward increasing recycling.”
Please note that some items are not allowed in any of your carts and require special disposal such as electronic waste, sharps, medicine, fluorescent bulbs, motor oil/filters, hazardous materials, medications and batteries. Check out wastediversion.org for resources for proper disposal of these items.
